SharePoint 2010 - 'Immediate alert job' not working

  SharePoint 2010 - 'Immediate alert job' not sending email notifications after the initial notification that gets sent to the user after an alert gets created in a list. The last run time shows 'N/A' and the server is now up to SP2 for SP2010.

  I tried almost everything possible that I found on forums online and I think I have hit a brick wall with this. Help would be much appreciated.
