  • Question

  •

bought my laptop from Dell with office professional 2003 in 2004

A couple of years ago my disc crashed and had to be replaced. I now find that when the validation software rune it tells me I do not have a legal version of office. Does this mean that the repair shop has loaded an unauthorised version of the software? I do not want to pay again for Office as i have already paid. Below is the error report

You have two versions of Office installed on this PC -
Office Pro 2003 - which is based on a Blocked Volume License Key stolen from MS, and blocked many years ago.
Office Pro 2007 - which appears to be legal.

You need to uninstall the Office Pro 2003, reboot twice, and then visit the Office Validation pages and attempt to validate Office - then run a new MGADiag report, and post back with the results.

  • Hello davepritch,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007 - 100 Genuine

As you noted, your installation of Office Professional 2003 is a nongenuine Volume Licensing installation that was done with a widely pirated and now blocked Volume Licensing product Key.

Your installations of Project Professional 2007 and Visio Professional 2007 are reporting as Genuine installations, so no worries there.

As you suspect, it's very common for a computer to go to a repair shop with genuine software and come back with nongenuine software.  You are at the mercy of the competence of the technician and whether they either know enough about the topic to install the correct licensed software, or whether they want to spend the extra time it takes to do so.

If your computer came from Dell with a full OEM installed license for Office Professional 2003 (rather than a Trial version of another edition of Office), then correcting the problem is not too difficult:

    1.  Uninstall Office Professional 2003 from the Add or Remove Programs applet in Control Panel, then restart twice.

    2.  Run the MS FixIt utility in the Method 2 section of this MS KB article:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275  The utility will remove the opa11.dat file that is not removed when uninstalling.  Restart once more.

    3.  Next, use the genuine hologrammed Office installation discs that came with your Dell to do a fresh installation of Office.  The product key needed to do the installation is printed on the Office Certificate of Authenticity that is affixed to the paperboard CD sleeve that the discs come in from Dell.  Restart.

    4.  Now open up Word 2003 which should start th Activation wizard.  Activate normally online.

    5.  Next go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button.  Office should now validate normally.

    6.  Restart, then go to Microsoft Update and get all the updates needed for Office.  This will requre a lot of downloading and several restarts and revisits to Microsoft Update.

    7.  You're done.

Post back and let us know how you do :-)
