I can only Log into Vail through the Launchpad using my user name and password, but not with my PC and main password. RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to log in through the launchpad, it gives me a passsword error. If I log in through Launchpad with one of the user accounts and the user password, it opens and then asks for the main password. after the dashboard opens, the 2 PCs are there in the accounts menu with the right names and windows 7 versions along with the two set up user names. I can also back both PCs up. I should be able to open Launchpad and type in the PC name assigned and then the main password, correct? Should I reinstall or is there a work around.

Also, does the fact that running 32bit windows 7 on these two computers is causing an issue with login? The OS's are both Windows 7 Premium Home Edition 32 bit.  The server is a custom build using a AMD Phenom X64 quad core 9600 processor ( I think its a 9600,Iknow it is a 9600 or posibly a 9800 ) no less a 64 bit capible processor ,a Gigabyte Motherboard and 4 gigs of DDR 2 800mhz Ram. The motherboard is a 770 chipset, not sure what model number exactly. 2 HDs, a 1 TB seagate 32 mb cache 7200rpm  and a 500 gb 32 mb cache 7200 rpm.  Also, on the Motherboard, there are two red dimm slots 1 and 2 and two yellow dimm slots 3 and 4. I was told to run one stick of RAM in the first and one stick in the third to get dual channel. Is this correct? I have never had a problem with them before as they came out of a upgraded HTPC using the same board and RAM in slots 1 and 2. It always showed on the led display something like 600 mbs for system and 3400 mbs available. Changed out for a 790 fx full atx for crossfire for graphis on a large LCD screen.

This same custom build ran WHSV1 power pack 3 for awhile using four 500 gb seagate Hard Drives. I removed them ,including the one with the WHS V1 program on it to run the beta because of the homegroup option. Also I did not want to lose all of my movies, music and backups. If I go back to the WHS v1 I guess it is possible to loose all the info. They are numbered and stored in static bags in a cool place until I evaluate Vail.

I have not tried any troubleshooting yet as I do not know what to do. It is headless, but I have a moniter and keyboard and mouse for it to access it while I was having some configuration problems with my router. Sould I do a reindstall. I am runnning the main version, not the sdk version. Also I would not be loosing any information needed since I have only backed up my PCs. I also have external backups as well so no loss of important info would occur.

One last question, can you partition drives in WHS or Vail. I have never tried or looked into this option.

Thanks in advance for any info,

    Centexbear

  • When connecting to the PC's remotely you need to use the password (and user name, not account name associated with Vail) associated with that machine.

  • No, you can't use a PC name to log in to the launchpad. Only one of the user names you have created on Vail.

Regarding which slots to place your RAM in, please read your motherboard manual. You'll find the answer there.

And no, you can't manually partition the drives that Windows Home Server uses, whichever version you have installed.

  • this is related to the passwords expiring issue.

you can reset the validity of the passwords via the administration panel and selcting the users folder, right clicking on a user will give you a property which you can set the password conditions to never expire and user can't change.

    this should hopefully help
