Has to but cannot activate after failed SP1 update RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've tried to upgrade to SP1 via Windows Update a couple of times and it kept failing with some obscure error code. Now Windows thinks it's not genuine, although I have the retail box and it was running without issues for months. I've added a new wifi card and an extra disk recently, but that did not trigger it. It was the failed SP1 update which suggested me to run WindowsActivationUpdate.exe. I hope you can sort it out. Thanks in advance.

    I've run MGADiag.exe:

  • Thanks for the tip. I've tried to avoid that as it is very cumbersome and might not work if this is indeed some weird error related to the SP1 update. Anyway, will try it and report back.

  • Well, phone activation did work. Waiting for Windows Update at the moment.

  • I don't know why you were avoiding that.  That is what the Notification message said to do.

Rerun the MGADiag and paste the report here.

  • The failed SP1 update directed me to this link which does not mention activation issues. So I dismissed it at first.

Also, I just don't like the concept of phone activation in the 21st century or maybe I'm just being lazy. :)

Anyway, my Windows is now activated and SP1 has just finished installing successfully. Thanks for your help.
