There was no need to uninstall and reinstall.
When activating with the *same* LiveID, your subscription is recognized no matter if it is a new retail CD or a download from the OneCare site.
Since your subscription has not expired, go to http://billing.microsoft.com and sign in with your subscription LiveID. (Open OneCare and click help/about to view the subscription LiveID)
Select the OneCare subscription and click on the renew link.
Choose the option to renew with a token which is the retail product key.
Enter the 25 character key and proceed.
Once you have completed this, OneCare will update the subscription status the next time it communicates with the server.

I follow this , and still could update subscription. When I click the windows live one care icon at the bottom, it shows a page on which is a red subscription icon. After clicking it, another page pops up and shows step 1,which is not necessary, and then step2. On this page, it says I need to eubscrib, but after clicking the continue online button, a page of install "connect and share anywhere"comes up.I have installed it thousands of times, but still could update the subscription.I don't know why.

See this post regarding Activation redirecting you to a page where you cannot activate, but are presented with a view of available Windows Live Products instead -

My issue is similar. Old version expired. I purchased a new version. I uninstalled the old one installed the new one and when I enter the PIN it says the pin has been used to the max times. I'm doing this on a desktop that operates as the hub. My wife installed this same new package on a laptop and registered using the PIN. Is this a problem?Thursday, January 17, 2008 2:55 AM

Yes. you need to use the LiveID, which your wife used on her PC to activate the subscription, to activate your copy. The PIN can only be used once to activate the subscription. Subsequent activations are performed with the LiveID.

That's great if you happen to have a relationship with the billing department, however I bought both versions from Staples when I go to billing they say that I have no relationship with billing so won't talk with me on line. I am like the other guy same thing. Why can't this be fixed to direct us to use the code in the first place? I have only a few days left to get this fixed and have only had the program a week!!! LawrenceIf you have an active subscription, which is what was created when you activated on the first computer, you need to use the same LiveID on the subsequent activations. You can't use the same key twice. If you are arriving at a screen to purchase or provide a token, you are likely not using the same LiveID as the subscription ID.
If you don't recall the LiveID you used for your subscription, you will need to contact support who can provide that information to you using your Key and/or contact information.

Alternatively, sign in at http://billing.microsoft.com with email addresses that you have set up as LiveIDs and one will show your subscription listed - that would the LiveID to use to activate the reinstall.
If, at signin on the Billing page you receive a message "No Billing Relationship..." that means you're not using the correct LiveID.

Had you not reinstalled, the following would have been the steps to take:
If your subscription to OneCare shows expired in OneCare
- Check your PC date and time.
- Check your subscription status by logging in with your subscription LiveID at http://billing.microsoft.com
If your subscription is correctly shown at the Billing site, but incorrect in OneCare and your PC date and time are correct, please contact support.

Since you have reinstalled and don't recall the LiveID, the following applies:

My laptop had problems went in for service and came back to me without the Windows Live OneCare....so I reloaded on my laptop and loaded it on my desktop. There was no place to activate the software and it is about to expire. I like all the other people on this forum have spent countless hours trying to find help but no luck. I NEED to have this activated. I went to billing.microsoft.com and they have no record of me..........................................HELP ME NOW please.

Hello,
I downloaded from the site & paid for a one year subscription & everything shows in accounts & billing but my program states I have 17 days until I have to renew! I was given a 20 character Product ID # so I can't enter this in the renew section. I did download a 90 day trial version but can't seem to activate the program I paid for.
Appreciate the help!

vmxr, I'm not clear on the order of events and you current status.
Is this a new subscription? Did you install from http://onecare.live.com and then go through the steps to subscribe, but OneCare has not updated to show that you are subscribed?
And, on http://billing.microsoft.com, it shows your valid subscription?
In OneCare, Help/About... is your subscription LiveID shown? Or does it say it is a trial?
Is you PC date and time correct?
Do you have a link in OneCare to subscribe?

Steve,
Let me express to you the absolute frustration I have over the activation process. It's as user friendly as a sharp stick in the eye!!! The OEM key code won't work...that's insane! The software can't tell its on the same computer? I am not impressed. And every item requires I log into an account I didn't want in the first place! I don't want a warm touchy feely relationship! I want the software that I purchased to work when I install it. Is that too much to ask for considering nobody objected when they took my money! Here's the deal, when I installed the program form cd it did required i activate a once care id. NO WHERE in the process did it inform me this id was required to re-activate if and when a reinstall was required, I figured it was another way to receive more SPAM from you guys so I pretty much disregarded the log in id. I have reinstalled on the SAME computer but I do not have the original id used for activation. Could you explain how to remedy this situation?

Yes, the activation process is a pain with the LiveID, but this is required for a subscription based service, to tie the activations to an account.
If you don't recall the LiveID you used for your subscription, you will need to contact support who can provide that information to you using your Key and/or contact information.

Also, this doesn't help you now, but it is my understanding that they are working on providing a means to enter your product key online to determine what the LiveID for that key is. I don't know when that will be available, so support is the way to go now.

Are you trying to purchase a new subscription with a credit card?
If so, make sure that there is no punctuation in any of the fields. That would include dashes in the credit card number, dashes or apostrophes in the name and address fields, etc. Just use letters and numbers and then submit.
