Windows is activated , but not genuine issue. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to help a client at a remote location in a barge.  They don't have an internet connection.   I installed Windows 7 that I bought from Amazon on a computer that had Windows XP.  I activated it and updated it. Fast forward two months and  they have this issue:

Windows Activation indicates Windows is Activated on both computers; however a Windows pop-up will appear stating the software may not be genuine and to Resolve online.  These computers do not have Internet access so cannot resolve online.

I think they can download program offsite and use a memory stick to install necessary program to troubleshoot.

Answers

  • The first is using a OEM_NSLP (System Builder) Key - which would be normal for this situation.

The second is using a Volume MAK Key - which CANNOT be bought through Amazon, and which is almost certainly counterfeit if that was the case here.

BOTH have a problem possibly caused by bad drivers.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • 'both computers' - on how many computers is this license installed??

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • There are two computers with two different serial numbers: Both computers are WIndows 7 Professional 32 bit.  Here is the result for the first computer.  I'll put the result for the second on the next post.

  • It seems like the second license is using Volume license.  Let me clarify with them.  They have two Dell computers which should not having any license issue.  They also have  two Advantech that I installed Windows 7 cd purchased from Amazon.

  • Neither of the above machines are Dells, as far as I can tell (and they are usually pretty obvious!)

Both appear to be based on retail motherboards.

  • Both logs are now free of errors.

... which just leaves you with the uncertainty about the validity of the licenses themselves.

OEM System Builder licenses by definition are required to have the associated COA sticker attached to the PC.

Volume Licenses are by definition Upgrades - and require at least  XP Pro/Vista Business/7 Pro to upgrade from. Most times this base license is from the manufacturer's COA_SLP or COA_NSLP License (which must have the associated COA sticker). Sometimes it's necessary to provide a Retail license - in which case the disks, packaging, and Proof of License must be transferred with the computer.

If neither COA sticker nor Proof of License is available, then the installs are counterfeit.
