INVALID Product Key after Installation of Win 7 Pro RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just reinstalled Win 7 after a format of a new laptop.  This is the only installation and I keep getting a non genuine product key.  This did not come with the laptop.  We purchased OEM Win & Pro licenses and I am looking directly at this key and have retyped it 6 times.  When I call MS, I get the same thing.  Invalid.  Below is the report for the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool.  Please help.

  • This a user to user self-help forum used primarily by end users.  We are all volunteers.  Noel Paton and Darin Smith (MSFT), who hang out here a lot, are pretty expert but what I think you really need to do is to replace the software.

Doesn't Tech Data give you support for their products?  I suggest you return the problematic software to Tech Data and replace it.  I suppose it is possible that it is a re-packaged product.  Who knows?

Note:  There are specific forums for system builders linked at

    http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/community/social/Pages/oem-reseller-system-builder-forums.aspx

There are some real experts there, though perhaps not on activation issues specifically.  Worth a try?

  • (You do not say which product key you are looking at.)  Do not try to use the product key printed on the label on the bottom of your laptop (or in the battery compartment).  You have to use the pk from the jewel case from the system builder pack.

If this software was previously installed on another computer it is now invalid.  OEM licenses cannot be transferred.

For the record, the correct license for this computer is a retail (upgrade or full) license.  An OEM system builder license is out of compliance when used in this way.  It still should activate if this is the first computer it was used on, but not if used previously.  If you purchased it on eBay then you have been sold a product under false pretenses.

  • Actually, I did state which license.  "This did not come with the laptop.  We purchased OEM Win & Pro licenses and I am looking directly at this key and have retyped it 6 times. "

Again, this license DID NOT come with the laptop or in otherwords the label at the bottom of the laptop is NOT being used.

This is a RETAIL purchase that is contained in a plastic MS box with the DVD.

License is stated as invalid still.  Please help.

  • The MGADiag report shows that the WAT update is not installed (that's what the file mismatches mean) but that is not a problem.  The report also shows that the issue remaining is that you have not yet activated the software.  As to Microsoft stating that the product key is invalid, did the tech tell you why?  What happens if you repeat the process but ask for a supervisor?

Click Start, type "slui.exe 3", choose activate by phone, ignore automated requests and the software will eventually transfer you to a live agent.

Tech Data is a distributor.  An attempt to access their site required logging in with a reseller account ID.  Did you use the OEM Preinstallation Kit to install this product as directed by the license?

  • We have never used the OEM preinstall kit.  We purchased 120 different NEW retail packages and the did not come with an OEM preinstall KIT.  We are not USING dell software at all.

I have done th activation through Slui.exe 3 and Slui.exe 4 from another thread.  telephone activation did not send me or give me the option to talk with a rep.  it disconnects me the moment it VERBALLY tells me it is invalid.

I am not dealing with Dell here but MS.  Both activation via phone and internet do not work.

Again, we are not using a Dell License or any dell software at all.  I have loaded over 90 of these laptops with Retail packaged Win 7 pro DVD and have not shared anything.  They each have their own, Unused/Unactivated licenses that a sealed in its own MS packaging.

As far as tech data, yes, you need an account which we have.  We are a business.

Is there someone on here that can help me please?

To repeat what Colin said, do not respond to any of the automated prompts. This will cause a real person to pick up.
