Windows Live OneCare Will not start RRS feed

  • Question

  • Onecare doesn't start onload of the computer and doesn't start if i click on the icon for it in the All Programs menu.  All i get is a message i posted below and the Red 1 logo in my nitfication area.  I ran the AntiMaleware tool and it couldn't fix it.  I tried to stop and restart the service the it couldn't be stopped.  I tried restarting my computer numerous time and still not working.  I also tried reinstall and still is not working.  I also tried the RepairBootIni tool and it couldn't find the boot file.

    The message i get is:

"The Windows Live OneCare service is not working or has been stopped.  To correct this problem, try restarting your computer.  If the problem persists, contact support"

  • Check the date and time on your PC. If it is incorrect, the problem you encountered could happen.

If the date and time are accurate, the permissions on the OneCare folder may need to be reset by using the following steps

    1. Click Start->Run->Type “CMD(In Vista, type cmd in the search box, but don't hit enter and then right click command.exe and select and “Run as Administrator”)
    2. Type    CACLS "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live" /t /g administrators:f
    3. Type “Y” when prompted.
    4. Restart the machine

Please let us know if this resolves it.

  • At this point, assuming your Vista issues are resolved, remove OneCare - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=663806&SiteID=2 (be sure to use the cleanup tool, too)

Reinstall from http://onecare.live.com and activate/subscribe with the same LiveID you originally subscribed with.
