SyncFX 2.0: SQL2008Express and Outlook RRS feed

  • Question

  • Some question about the mentioned szenario:

1.) When did you plan to make a working sample for the new SyncFX 2.0? The "old" sample is didn´t working

2.) When you will not release a newer sample, can you please say me, what I must do to create a application that sync my database (a table with the columns "Name", "Firstname", "Street", "ZipCode" and "Country") with the data in my outlook 2003? Is the SyncOrchestrator the right way? Which providers I must using?

3.) Have someone create a sample with the above szenario and can send it to me, so that I can learn from them? Or have someone a description of the steps what he/she do to solve the problem? Can I contact you mail/ICQ?

4.) Is someone interested for a OpenSource-Project (e.g. Codeplex) to write a sample application an a reference documentation for this scenario?

Thank you very much for the answers

  • Hi Michael,

We will likely release a sample that demonstrates what you are looking for some time in the future.  In the meantime there was another thread that described the steps needed to accomplish this:

  • Thank you for your answer. But the link is not helpfull for me. I very confused about that what I read in the mentioned link.

My problem is to find a how-to for syncing Outlook and a SQL-Database.

I hope someone can guide me. Here is my actual scenario:

    Outlook 2003 - Sync FX 2.0 - SQL 2008 Express
In SQL i have create a Database (SynContacts). The DB has one table (Contacts). The columns are ContactGUID,ContactName, ContactFirstName, ContactStreet, ContactZIP and ContactCity

    I create a new empty WinForms-Project (VB.NET) in Visual Studio 2008 (SyncOutlookDB)

What should the next step. I think it better for me I do small steps and ask the open question. When I´m ready then I can do the next step. Can someone help me?

  • Hi Michael,

Unfortunately there is no immediate plan to release that sample.  Have you gone through any of our documentation about the various components in Sync Framework?

If not here is a good place to start:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd937565.aspx

We have out of the box Database Providers and we also have the framework to build custom providers.  It sounds like your scenario needs a database provider on one side (SynContacts) and a custom provider on the other side (Outlook contacts).  Your main task will be to build a custom Outlook contact provider.  We actually have a sample that has uses an Outlook provider here:

    http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ProjectName=sync&ReleaseId=613

Or you can choose to use our Simple Provider framework which makes it even easier to write a custom provider.  Info on that can be found here:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd937537.aspx

With a Simple Provider file sync sample here:

    http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ProjectName=sync&ReleaseId=3414

The second task you will need to do is make the Database Provider work alongside your custom provider.  The link in my previous post decribes how to do this.

Hope this is a good start.
