  • Remove "start a discussion" and "ask a question". This is pointless and requires an extra step from the user. Most people are able to differentiate from a discussion and a question from the post contents.

Rename "Ask a question" to "New thread" or "Create thread". I hunted around for New Thread for 2 minutes going "where the hell do I start a thread".

Modify the Edit button to take you to the edit screen without the need to present you with another drop down box. Again I wondered what was going on when it didn't take me to the edit screen in one click.

  • I agree with you on both issues here.

The initiation of a thread is somewhat improved in the latest version because the choice between "Ask a Question" and "Start a Discussion" is now radio buttons with "Question" as the default (previously it was a dropdown, which caused a lot of people to do the wrong thing). But I think the text on the forum page should be something agnostic, like "New Thread".

For the Edit/Delete dropdown I agree with you totally. 99% of the time, the person wants "Edit", so it should not be a dropdown. At the very least, the original button should be something agnostic, like "Modify". Better, separate buttons for Edit and Delete.

Maybe these things will be improved in the version 4.0 forums...

  • In the coming release, Ask A Question will become more prominent and hopefully easier to discover.

Edit/Delete will be directly accessible, dropdown is gone. In fact the entire set of available options at the thread and message level will be directly accessible.
