Will current configuration work for WHS RRS feed

  • Question

I am debating between picking up a refurbished pc, or using my current desktop for my WHS when I get my new laptop.

My current desktop is a 4 year old custom build using:

    ASUS A8V Deluxe Motherboard

    AMD Athlon 34 3000+ Processor

1 GB of DDR2 Ram (would upgrade to 2 GB)

    On-board sound

    NVIDIA 6600GT Video Card

    2 WD 160GB SATA I harddrives

    2 DVD RW Drives

    Antec 550 PowerSupply

My main concerns is that my current board only uses SATA I @ 1.5GB transfer rate rather than SATA II @ 3.0 GB.  Will I see a noticable decrease in speed by not having SATA II?

  • Hi,

Although the WHS overheads mean that it isn't the speediest server in the world, restricting it even further by using SATA 1 really would be a retrograde step.

Also, as this is a server, the first thing to do, is confirm that you can get Server 2003 drivers for the SATA and NIC etc.

Doesn't matter about sound, it won't be used, 2DVD drives are overkill, will only be used to install the software and then may never be used again, same goes for the video.

If you can get Server 2003 drivers, you could always buy a PCI SATA card, they are cheap enough nowadays.
