Running an OS in a virtual machine is exactly the same as it is when
running on physical hardware.

Thank you. Well, if it is that easy, I'll have to look at my network configuration. My network adapter is bridged to a wireless USB adapter on the host (a wireless WS2008 R2), and that could be the reason. But I think that's my only way to obtain a wireless virtual machine - as things are. Maybe the wireless USB adapter was a bad idea.Friday, March 11, 2011 9:02 AM

Yes I confirm it's 100% possible.
My WHS 2011 run under Hyper-V core server and provide homegroups for all my network:
My main desk computer, a laptop and a Win7 running on the same Hyper-V that WHS
I think so that Wireless USB is a bad idea since Hyper-V doesn't support USB device. But It may see the network adaptator if you're running Hyper-V under a full Win Server 2008 R2
(I shall try a usb wireless stick on my hyper-V core to see how it react)

Thank you. Does your WHS have its own network adapter? That is: your core server has two adapters. That's the recommended setup, I believe.
I'm bridging my two connections (there is only one adapter on the WS 2008 R2), but sharing the connection could be another solution.

I use only one NIC on my server. The server as 2 NIC installed, but all is configured on one card
Hyper-V host and 3 guests (WHS2011 - Win7 - Linux Debian) are sharing access to this only NIC ... and all works pretty great over Gbit network

I am having a similar issue in that I have a homegroup set up, 5 windows 7 physical machines belong to the home group, but when I try to configure homegroup in WHS 2011 dashboard, it says that none exist on the network and asks me if I want to create one. I have a WHS 2011 Hyper-v VM running on Windows 2008 R2 standard using the Hyper-V role. Otherwise it works perfect, configured using one NIC (Gigabit), network discovery on and functioning properly. Able to pick up WHS 2 on my PS3 and play movies/music. The homegroup function isn't a must have, but I am curious as to why it isn't recognized. Come to think of it, when I create a regular win 2008 R2 VM, in Network and Sharing, there is no option for joining a homegroup. I am thinking it has something to do with domain/workgroup, but not sure.Thursday, March 24, 2011 12:19 AM

In my case the HomeGroup connection would simply hang. Did you check that your WHS 2011 is on the same subnet as the win7'esThursday, March 24, 2011 8:26 AM

You may first check if the service "homegroup listener" is launched
After that, go to the file explorer => Right clics ont Homegroups => Start the homegroup Troubleshooter
