Drive encryption and the storage pool? RRS feed

  • Question

I would like to use Truecrypt to encrypt all the drives in my computer.  When I do this the software will encrypt the entire drive and, when accessed using the right password, an unencrypted volume will be mounted to the file system.  This volume will be NTFS formatted and is what I would like to add to the storage pool.

This raises a few questions...  If I have to manually mount the encrypted partitions they will not be available all at the same time and they will most certainly not be available when windows starts.  If all the drives in the storage pool are offline when the computer starts what happens?  If they come up one by one will Windows determine that files are missing and try to recover them from mirrored data on other drives (and will that stop once the appropriate drive comes online)?

Anyone have experience with encryption in WHS and want to share some tips?

  •  What you want to do isn't possible; you can't use whole drive encryption tools (BitLocker, TrueCrypt, etc.) to encrypt your server storage drives.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
