CRM 4.0 - Error - HELP! "The text entered exceeds the maximum length" RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I have a CRM 4.0 implementation that was upgraded from CRM 3.0.

Sometimes when a sales rep tries to send an email, they get an error "The text entered exceeds the maximum length"

I have searched on this error and everything points to increasing the MessageID attribute size to 200. I did this and still had some errors. I also read that some people increased it to 250. So I did, same thing.

Each time, I published all changes and rebooted the server. Still the same error.

Can anyone shed some light as to what might be causing this?

    Regards,

    Chuck

  • Hey there,
I had exactly the same issue and after tracking on the server I found out the problem was the MessageID maximum lenght. It was 100 by default. Set it up to 250 on the email entity settings, published, and that was it!

    Regards.!

Okay, it appears that this problem is actually not the email activity popping this message. It appears that the increasing of that attribute fixed that trouble. This is a different / similar error.

It appears that the phone number attribute in a contact is 50 characters, however the default size for a phone call activity is 25. Bringing up the Phone Call Activity shows all 50 characters, but saving it fails with the same error. Increasing the attribute sizes appears to have fixed this.

  • Enable Error tracing by adding the TraceEnabled DWORD = 1 to the MSCRM key in the registry.
You’ll need to reset the iis (IISRESET) in order for the tracing to kickin.

Tell your rep to inform you when the error re-appears and check the trace file for the exact error.
In v4.0 the trace log is located at the [CRM installation directory]\trace folder.

  • I was having this issue, changed the default to 250 and the issue persisted.  Changed the default to 400 and I was still getting the error.  The subject line read something like "March 23 Winback Name" When I shortened it to just "23 Name" it worked, but I don't understand how the original subject didn't with messageid set to 400. Any ideas?

  • i am fairly new to this forum and only have limited experience but i found that by forwarding it to myself it worked fine (before the above information seemed to resolve my problem), you could just try actually cutting and pasting the exact subject from the failed email into a new one and see if it works? Is it possible that there are many empty spaces after the last character taking it over the space allocation that you have set? just an idea, but after a couple of other issues i was recommended by our CRM partner to add roll up 7 and 11 onto the individual user machines (restarting the machine between each 7 first). Also is it possible to ask the sender to maybe send the email to another user within your firm with CRM and see if they are able to track?
