Itunes on WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • G'day,
    My WHS is on 24/7.
Is there a way to put itunes on the WHS so when I want to download pod casts I don't have to have my study pc on.
I also want to be able to hook up my ipod touch to my study pc, or over wireless, to then sync with my itunes libary.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Given what you want to do, there's no way to do it in a supported or recommended fashion. iTunes is s single user, single computer media solution; it would have to be running on the server at all times, on the server desktop, to allow you to download podcasts on your server.

You can, however, move your music library to your server. On the advanced tab in iTunes Preferences, just change your Music folder location.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • While it's true that the music library can reside on the the server, one must avoid the temptation to access that library from more than one instance of iTunes. Even when concurrent use by different client computers is carefully avoided, that seems to result in a corrupted library after a while. Others may have a better experience, but I have given up and reverted to keeping both iTunes and its library together on a client machine.

Apple and MS have very different ideas about music sharing. "Don't cross the streams!"

Installing any application from the server desktop on WHS is unsupported.  I know other users have tried, but I don't know how successful they were.  You might try searching through the forums and see what you can come up with.

  • Thanks Kariya21,
I looked through the forums and found some addins but they seem just to be able to use an itunes libary and not be the itunes.

  • I'm using iTunes on WHS. Although it is unsupported use but it works for me. I'm enabling music sharing and it can be played by client PCs.

However, there is one issue. If you rip CDs with AAC format with iTunes on Mac, it can't be shared on iTunes for Windows. It seems be Apple's bug. (It's not an WHS issue but common PC/Mac issue)

If you encode AAC files on Windows, there are no problem and there are no issues for MP3 files.
