WHS 2011 Installation Failure, no error message. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows Home Server 2011 will not install.  I have pulled all expansion cards except the GPU (as there is no integrated video on the motherboard).  The only USB devices connected are the keyboard and mouse.  I have disconnected all but one hard drive.  I have verified the ISO SHA-1 checksum is identical to my ISO.  I have burned two DVD-ROMs with different ISO burning utilities.  The only thing I can think of that I haven't tried is going into the BIOS and disabling motherboard features I don't need.

    It fails during file unpacking.

    Here is the setup.log file:

  • It has the feel of a bad ISO, but given what you have said I would try changing the HD and/or hard drive cables

Do you have another hard drive you can use temporarily to verify the Maxtor HD is really healthy rather than just passing the SMART check ?. Also try removing and reseating the disk data cables or possibly replacing them if you can.

If this does not help resolve the issue I would re download the ISO again. Still suspect the ISO burn to media is bad and this is the real issue!. Can you burn the ISO to disk on a different DVD burner?.

  • Any ideas?

Could be a problem with the DVD unit.
    Try another DVD-ROM drive.

Personally I would prefer removing the DVD-ROM unit, move the installation .iso image to an USB-stick (f.i. using the Windows 7 USB DVD download tool) and retry installing from USB.

  • I created burned a new disc on a different computer and installed a new hard drive.  Success!

(I now have different issues but that will be in a new thread.)

    Thanks for your help.

  • I have a simillar problem  I am trying to install WHS 2011 on a new Proliant Microserver w/ 4 GB and 1 260 GBHD.  The install stops with an error log like Howard's with the same last entry.  I downloaded and burned a new DVD but from the same PC, and it stops at the same place.  The DVD drive is also new.
