  • Windows Defender is not an antivirus program, it only protects against spyware and similar malicious activity that tries to modify Windows. You need an antivirus program in addition to Defender. OneCare includes the protection of Defender, so upon installing OneCare, Defender will either be removed (XP) or disabled (Vista).

The 0044 error typically means that OneCare was installed and not cleanly removed. If you have never had OneCare installed, I don't know why you'd get that error. However, since the PC is infected already, installing any antivirus product is already going to be an uncertainty. I suggest using an online scanner first to attempt to clean the infections from the PC - and if you had no virus protection, you probably have many more than the 2 listed.

    Online scanners:

Once clean, run the OneCare cleanup tool:

    Then install OneCare.

  • You can try the cleanup tool and then try to install OneCare. If that still fails, you're going to need to get that infection dealt with first. On the other hand, you may want to bite the bullet and format the PC and restore to factory condition. Copy your data files to CD/DVD or an external or network drive. Get all Windows Updates applied, install OneCare. Scan your backed up files before restoring them to the PC...
