error: Unknown problems are preventing OneCare from making this PC a hub at this time

We have 3 computers.  This computer was the hub for our circle (or triangle as someone stated earlier!).  This computer has the external backup device on it and we use it for the centralized backup.  We had to wipe and reload Windows and all other software on one of the other computers.  Once that was done, this hub computer showed 2 computers with the same name in the circle and I couldn't configure the backup on either of them.  So I tried to remove one of them.  That woudn't work.  Next I tried taking the hub status off this machine.  That worked, but now I can't get it to be a hub again.  I get the above message.

I figured it might be a server problem, but the server sure worked fine just a few minutes ago when I renewed our subscription.

  • Thanks for the fast response.  Yes the subscription status is up to date and was up to date when I was grying to get the hub status reinstated.  After about 20 more tries to get this as the hub,  amazingly all of a sudden it worked.  Who knows why.  Apparently the computer gods were with me.  All is well now.

  • At what point do you encounter this error on the machine you are trying to configure to be the hub?

Is the subscription status on this machine up to date now that you have renewed?

If the problem persists, you may want to consider reinstalling (which will, unfortunately mean reconfiguring the backup in all likelihood - I've not reinstalled a hub machine that was hosting centralized backup, so I can't be certain) or contacting support.

  • Glad to read it was resolved. My guess is that it was a connectivity issue to the server side of things or a problem at the server. Persistence pays off sometimes. ;-)

  • Make sure the date and time are set correctly on the computer.  I was getting the same "Unknown problem is preventing OneCare from making this PC a hub PC" error and it turned out that the date was set wrong on my PC.  I corrected the date and it allowed me to make the PC a hub PC.

  • Thanks for that information. That darn date and time setting can affect quite a bit with OneCare. It is a wonder that the program doesn't just monitor this and at least offer to fix it for you by comparing the system time, your time zone setting and the server time.
