  • how do I restore emails and contacts from outlook 2003 & 2007?  I have changed computers and OS from XP to Vista

  • First you need to install OneCare on the new PC.
    Then, perform a restore in OneCare, selecting the option "from another PC"

     

      Restore files from a backup

       

      If your computer goes through a hardware failure or if some of your files are deleted from your computer and you've backed up your files, you can restore the files to your computer from a previous backup. If you're using a hub PC, you can restore backup files from any computer in your OneCare circle. You can choose which files to restore and which backup to restore the files from.

      To restore all files from a backup:

    1. Open Windows Live OneCare.
    2. In the main OneCare window, in the Backup and Restore area, click Restore files.
    3. Click Restore files from a local backup.
    4. Click Express Restore.
    5. Click Restore files.
    6. Click Finish.
    7. To select specific files to restore or to select a specific backup to restore from:

    8. Open OneCare.
    9. In the main OneCare window, in the Backup and Restore area, click Restore files.
    10. Click Restore files from a local backup.
    11. Click Custom Restore.
    12. To restore files from the most recent backup of your computer, click Restore files from the current backup on this computer.
    13. –or–

      Restore files that were backed up from another computer.

        2. Click the backup that you want to restore files from.

      Restore files from an earlier backup.

        2. Click the location of the backup device, and then click Next.

    14. To restore all files that are no longer on your computer, click Restore all missing files.

      Restore specific types of files.

        2. Next to the types of files that you want to restore, select the check boxes, and then click Next.
        3. Next to the files that you want to restore, select the check boxes, and then click Next.
        4. Decide whether you want to restore files that have the same name as files that are already stored on your computer, click the appropriate option, and then click Next.

      Select the files that you want to restore.

        2. In the search box, type all or part of the name of the file that you want to restore, and then click Next.
        3. Next to the files that you want to restore, select the check boxes, and then click Next.

    next, you will want to import your outlook data into a new profile created when you installed and opened Outlook on the new PC.

    Import restored e-mail

    After you use Windows Live OneCare to restore e-mail files from a backup, you must import the restored files into your e-mail program before you can access them. E-mail programs usually store your e-mail messages in special files that can be used only by the program that created them.

     Import restored e-mail in Microsoft Outlook Express 6
    1. Start Outlook Express.
    2. On the File menu, click Import, and then click Messages.
    3. Under Select Program, select the mail program that the original files were created in, and then click Next.
    4. Under Specify Location, click Import mail from an OE 6 store directory, and then click OK.
    5. Click Browse, select the folder where you restored your files, and then click Next.

      Usually, the folder name begins with C:\Restore, followed by the date of the restore operation.

    6. Under Select Folders, select the mail folders that you want to restore.
    7. Click Finish.
     Import restored e-mail in Microsoft Office Outlook
    1. Start Outlook.
    2. On the File menu, click Import and Export.
    3. Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.
    4. Under Select file type to import from, click Personal folder file (.pst), and then click Next.
    5. Click Browse, and then select the folder where you restored your files.
    6. Under Options, click Do not import duplicates, and then click Next.
    7. Under Select the folder to import from, make sure that the top-level folder of the mail that you're importing is selected and that the Include subfolders check box is selected.
    8. Select the folder where you want to put the imported files, and then click Finish.
     Import restored e-mail in Windows Mail
    1. Start Windows Mail.
    2. On the File menu, click Import, and then click Messages.
    3. In the Select Program list box, select the mail program that the original files were created in.
    4. Under Location of messages, click Browse, and then browse to the folder that contains the files. This folder appears on the final page of the OneCare Restore Wizard.

      Usually, the folder name begins with C:\Restore, followed by the date of the restore operation.

    5. Under Select Folders, select one or more mail folders that you want to restore, or click All Folders.
    6. Click Finish.
