RC1 Problem - Preparing drives failed. Error 0x80042405. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to install Home Server RC1 on my server but I keep getting errors after I begin the actual installation. Setup starts formatting my hard drive and then spits back a couple of errors. I've tried installing it over and over again with no success.

Following is an excerpt of the setup log file:

  • You also have to specify the SATA drivers during the win2k3 install by pressing F6, when prompted and providing the same driver as the first time. There are a dozen threads about the F6 driver issues.

RAID is not supported with Windows Home Server.  Most likely cause is due to controller driver issues.

It seems that the Windows install doesn't like the flash drive. I put a floppy drive on the system and loaded the raid drivers from that instead of the flash drive and it loaded successfully. Maybe there's a problem with the USB Flash driver that comes with WHS

That is because the Windows Server part of the install loaded the drivers for you automatically.  (Same thing as hitting F6).

Sometimes the drivers used on the floppy work correctly in WinPE don't work correctly with the Text mode install.

You're right. But, since I can't install RC1, I won't be of any further help at this time anyway.

I can't even see how I could invoke TALQ and submit a report at this point in the install since there's apparently no usable network, floppy, or USB flash drive support (at least, on this particular computer).

Oh, another piece of information on the failure that I forgot: Though RC1 cannot prepare the drive for it's use, Vista Ultimate has no problem formatting it. I thought that perhaps if I pre-formatted the drive, it would help. Nope, same problem.

For us to help you, you need to create your own thread and explain the situation.  You will have to try the things we request or we cannot bug report it or help you.

  • On that note, I am also using a RAID with two serial ATA hard drives.

I'm using a VIA K8M800 chipset with the onboard SATA RAID controller. I'm also using a flash drive to give the RC1 setup my drivers. I am not a beta user, this is attempting a clean install.

  • You also have to specify the SATA drivers during the win2k3 install by pressing F6, when prompted and providing the same driver as the first time. There are a dozen threads about the F6 driver issues.

  • Unfortunately, I don't see any prompts to press F6 during the initial part of the installation process.

When I boot from my RC1 DVD I see:

    Windows is loading files...
    Then I see a Vista-esque loading bar
Then a setup screen with the home server setup background (again vista-esque) and a small gray box saying Setup is initalizing...
After that, I see an error box with a title "Windows Home Server Setup Error" saying "Hard drive capable of hosting Windows Home Server was not found. Would you like to load additional storage drivers?" with a yes/no
I click yes and direct it to my flash drive where it locates the proper drive and continues
I then proceed to verify that my hard drive was detected, agree to the EULA, enter my key, acknoledge that it's going to wipe out my drive and continue
After that, I hit the error mentioned in the first post

  • Make sure that driver is the newest one, make sure you have the latest bios. Make sure the ISO you downloaded passed the crc and the burn was OK. If it's none of those, try swapping the dvd drive in the WHS. If that fails, try to move the hard drives to other ports, if possible. That's all I can think of, if you're not even getting to the F6 prompt.

    Good luck...

  • Exact same problem here. I had been running CTP without problem since 4/20. I verified that the RC1 download and DVD CRCs are correct (though reversed; what's up with that? I used AccuHash).

I'm not posting a log file since the computer freezes when I try to Save As Notepad log file to floppy or USB flash drive. Is that another problem or a clue to original problem?

I'm not going to bother with all the other advice here, updating BIOS, finding newer drivers, etc. Clearly this is a problem in RC1, not my computer. CTP worked fine, so I'm just going back to that until next version is available.

Enjoy CTP but your not really helping with "beta testing" that way since CTP no longer needs testing.

RAID is not supported with Windows Home Server.  Most likely cause is due to controller driver issues.

I was having the same faults at the same points, however I was able to get by them this morning.

Enjoy CTP but your not really helping with "beta testing" that way since CTP no longer needs testing.

  • I'm guessing you mean that there are no native RAID drivers in WHS. Once I moved my install from the flash drive to a floppy drive, I was able to get to the F6 prompt, where I could load the intel SATA RAID driver. The server has been running some time quite nicely on the SATA raid 1 volume, a pair of WD 500 GB drives.

I'm running WHS on a 4x250G SATA RAID5 array nicely too. I've found the same problems using flashdrives for storage drivers but a floppy works every time. There a plenty of threads where F6 saved the day.
