Refreshing an MS CRM 4.0 test environment for the Professional Edition, Importing a new organisation RRS feed

  • I have a question regarding importing an organisation for MS CRM 4.0 Professional edition.

    We currently have a Live CRM 4.0 environment and a Test CRM 4.0 environment. The Test environment was created from a copy of the Live environment database. The Test environment is now out of date and we would like to refresh it.

    I have found instructions for doing this with the Enterprise edition but am unsure how to do this with the Professional edition.

    With the Enterprise edition you can create a dummy organisation and delete the current test organisation but with the Professional edition you can't have more than 1 organisation. I understand that when you import the new organisation in the Professional edition it will replace the one currently there but as the new organisation will have the same name as the organisation already there how will Deployment manager detect it?

    Do I need to create a dummy organisation first so that it will replace the current test organisation and then import the new organisation which will replace the dummy organisation?

  • You can import directly the new database. The deployment manager will inform you that only one organization can be hosted in Professional edition.

    So, the existing organization will be removed and the one you want to import will be the only one remaining (the DB still exists on SQL Server)

    Just got 1 more question, do I need to add the new SQL database to the SQL server before detaching the old one?

    If so this may be a problem as I'd like the new SQL database to have the same name as the old one.

    Strictly, the limitation on Professional edition is that you can only have one enabled organisation. So, if you import an organisation, the previous organisation will be disabled.

    The route I normally take is to install CRM with a dummy organisation database, then you can import your organisation database with the correct name without any problems

    Thanks for your response, I'm not installing CRM on the Test server for the 1st time but want to refresh the Database on the Test server so I'm presuming from your answer that the best process to follow is to create a new dummy organisation which will disable the current one, then delete and detach the current one, then restore the copy of the production database then import the copy of the production database.

    That sounds right to me. It's a bit tortuous on CRM 4, as the only way to map the users etc. is via an import into a new organisation
