Intel Goes Green with Lead-Free Chips RRS feed

  • Question

  • AMD is not the only chipmaker going green. Intel on Tuesday said its future processors are going to be 100 percent lead-free. The transition will begin in the second half of this year with its family of 45-nm processors, including the next generation of Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, and Xeon processors.

    Danger of Lead

Lead is used in a variety of chip packages, which wrap around the chip and ultimately connect it to the motherboard. Different types of packages are used for processors targeted at specific market segments, including mobile, desktop, and server.

Like other potentially hazardous microprocessor materials, the danger of lead largely arises after a system is retired, according to Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT. At that point, lead can contaminate reclamation facilities, potentially harming workers or even polluting ground water, if the concentrations are high enough.

    Eco-Friendly Trend

The tech industry is seeing more green efforts, though they might be more of a knee-jerk reaction to rising energy costs than a move toward environmental sustainability.

AMD commissioned a study of 1,200 I.T. professionals in November 2006. Some 83 percent said the biggest issue they face is cooling and power within the data center. Only 20 percent said they have a plan in place to remedy the issue.

AMD has launched green efforts in the past, including a Green Grid Project in conjunction with Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, and IBM. The project is an interactive resource that aims to decrease data center energy use by defining and propagating best practices in data center operation.

While Intel's lead-free initiative won't help power consumption, it might satisfy the call from environmental groups demanding the industry reduce dangerous materials use in computers, according to IC Insights senior analyst Brian Matus.

  • With Intel going eco-friendly, we too will become eco-friendly since most of us use intel processors only.. Nice gesture from a company that brought a revolution in Chip making.. More can be expected from the market leader...
