  • I don't think checking activity is used. Then many will loose points. It maybe a case that we may reffer someone and he/she after registering do not participate actively. Checking unusual profile names maybe one of the methods used. Admins can answer this best.

  • IP address can't be a solution because very few ISPs give static IP. Some give dynamic IPs and others use IP masquerade.

  • Last time many persons were caught for making fake referrals I don't know what exactly is the procedure but IP address might not be the way since Abhrajit has rightly stated that in India most of the providers use dynamic IP addressing so you cannot check this problem by this.

If the problem turns out to be serious then I think they might not consider the whole referral stuff.

    A possible solution :
Also they can give a computer generated no. to the sms ed user and then the person who has recieved this sms has to enter the same code while registering for the contest

if he fails to do so the points for the person who has given this referral should not be incremented.

  • @Preetam

This is not a possible solution but this is the solution which admins have adopted. But still fakes are coming up using sms method also.

  • I dont think there is any method of detecting the fake referrals, because the referal system itself is very sound to prevent any fake referal...

So try putting down ways of making a fake referral....

And if you are trying to catch the fake referral by means of activity, well for your statistics only...
I referred to around 20 of my classmates.. out of this only 4 registered, out of that i recieved points for only 2, and believe me, this 2 are hardly active... Even their login points at rockstar site might be hardly 10....

But still i have the referral points... and they are not fake....

So try out, and give a way to make a fake referral, you will find lots of trouble in it...

As for the announcement of Referral Fraud, does anyone knows who was Narayanan N ??? I dont seem to recall this name, in the forums...

  • Well I have no idea that how fake referrals caught, but at the end of the contest fake referrals points are deducted...   so be very careful..

  • Deleting the referal points for the Inactive Referals doesnt matters !! Thats not our fault , we have just refered them but they are not active , so we cant do anything for them !! So deleting Inactive referals will not work !! Also calling to the Mobile numbers may also go wrong in some cases , bcoz what do some of them registered them with their fathers mobile !! I have referred nearly 4 of them who registered using there fathers mobile !!

May be ADMIN have to think some thing else !!

I think ,, this is what they are doing for referals from the starting of the contest !!!

  • The refferal process is buggy. At the initial stages, some of my e-mails weren't delivered to my friends. Lost out on those points, coz re-refferal to a same number is not allowed.

  • ya the new concept of referral is not at all good..it should be changed...or else there should'nt be any referral process...

  • i do accept that some of the referral mails don reach the person to whome we hav sent it...but its not fair to say that this idea to avoid fake referral is bad...this concept is really good...

  • if person didnt get any invitation u cant send again....wat a *** it is....

  • Idea to avoid fake refferal is good, atleast those whose mails are getting sent and are genuine are getting points.

  • hi i think the admin will check it out by  user activity n if the activity is ideal means then he will find out r else by ip address also...
    Thursday, October 18, 2007 6:14 AM
  • User activity and ip address can't be a solution. If a friend of yours doesn't login, then why should you loose points. As far as ip address is concerned. Very few ISPs give static IPs to domestic users. Either you have dynamic ip or ip masquerade(all users of that ISP being routed through a single ip).

  • I agree with Abhrajit_Mukherjee_280650.......

That is way to detect it but it has some drawback

If any referrals do not respond for any other reason then  it would be detect as fake

  • wht possible solution u have provided is already being used by microsoft......

whn u reffer someone u gve first name last name email id n mobile no....

after filling in all the registering details .....they send u a code n u have to enter the code error free in the first attempt......if u fail to do so the one who refered u doesnt gets points......
