We request all users initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool to try and identify the issue you may be having.

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,

  • Thanks for the suggestion.

During "update detection," this standalone version failed with the message "The detection failed, this can be due to a corrupted installation database."

I don't know if this message helps anyone to see what the problem might be;  all other updates from the last patch Tuesday installed successfully.

  • Hello MacMurphy,

Thank you for posting in the Windows Genuine Forum. Can you please provide more information as why you cannot  download KB934062, KB932080, or KB936960?  Also have or are you receiving any error codes and/or statements whatsoever indicating why the KB installations failed? Please visit http://support.microsoft.com/ and place the a KB article @ the Search Support (KB) box. Please review the KB article information, see if you may have any installed software that may conflict with the updates, and also try to manually install one of the updates.    First we really need for you to run the MGA Diagnostic Test. The test results coupled with any previous error codes and/or validation statements will allow us to analyze your particular problem so we may provide a resolution or other guidance. Please follow the steps below for running the MGA Diagnostic test then please post your results back in this thread:

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the

Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

Thank you and have a great day.

  • Hello Dmitriy,

Currently you have a blocked version of Office installed on your system. This may be one of the reasons why your having problems installing updates. Did you see any messaging about purchasing an Office Genuine Advantage Kit, (OGA).

  • I am having a problem installing 936514.  The machines in question are identically imaged and only a few are having a problem with the installation.  I receive the same incorrupt database errors as the previously posted contributors see.

These machines do not have Office 2007 installed.  They do, however, have the Compatibility Pack to which (if I read the KB correctly) does require the update, and they do detect that the update is needed through Automatic Updates.  These machines did have Office 2007 installed on them in the past which has been fully removed and does not show up in "Add / Remove Programs."

This problem has not been solved or answered. I've tried everything. When downloading the copy myself and running as administrator, I get the message "The detection failed, this can be due to a corrupted installation database."

Does anyone at Microsoft know how to solve this? It's almost trade in the PC for a Mac after 25 years.

  • Rather than tell us which forum to search through, find the solution and tell us about it. This problem is not solved--anywhere on microsoft.com and no one wants to spend 2 hrs waiting on hold for someone in Bangalore who will transfer us to someone in Arizone who doesn't know how to solve the problem, but is willing to guess.

  • Robert,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Forum. Sounds like your problems are Windows Updates (WU) related and not Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA). If so this would be out of the scope for WGA. First let’s see exactly what is happening. Have you validated your Windows Operating system?  Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the "Validate Windows" button located in the upper right hand corner of the webpage. Follow the instructions provided after you click on this button. Next restart your computer once you have completed the Windows Validation process.  Now please try updating Windows. Was the updating process successful or did you receive any error codes or messaging reflecting Windows Update problems?

Robert are you logged in as the administrator for your machine? Please try and download the updates, manually first and then run each one manually as the local admin? Please visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936960 and you can review as well as see which updates the security update contains.

Next please run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage (MGA) Diagnostic Tool and paste your results back here in the forum. This will help us analyze what you’re experiencing so we may either provide you with a resolution, give you Knowledge Base (KB) articles for help, or direct you to another forum specializing with WU for assistance.  Please run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage (MGA) Tool by follow the directions below:

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

    Thank you,

  • Hello Richard,

Let’s split your thread off so we may focus more attention on your particular situation.  Splitting threads are done to mitigate confusion caused by more than one posting about similar   topics allowing us to focus on each customer individually.  Please post your question here http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=442&SiteID=25 in a new thread of your own.

In order to receive the best support, we request all users to initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool.  The tool will try and identify the individual issue you may be experiencing.  Also, please provide a brief synopsis describing the issue including any error messages or codes. These can be found in the lower left hand corner of most Genuine Advantage Web pages when an error is encountered.

Please download and run the MS Genuine Diagnostic Tool utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.

    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,

  • To resolve the "the detection failed this can be due to a corrupted installation database" error that I was getting when trying to reinstall office 2007 sp1, or install kb950113, kb950114 (or even kb 946691) on an XP sp3 pc with office 2007 installed, I simply renamed this regkey: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\00002109030000000000000000F01FEC\Patches

To: 'patches_old' - the installers then ran with no errors, and a new ‘Patches’ regkey was auto created.

For the record, windows update had said no updates were needed - it was secunia’s psi which told me word and publisher 2007 needed patching....additionally another symptom I faced was when trying to do a repair install (change) from control panel/add remove programs, the office 2007 configuration window popped up, then closed - this is also now working correctly.
