70-431 Exam Prep question: My answer marked incorrect, but it can't be incorrect, or can it? RRS feed

  • Question

  • There is a question in the Microsoft Press 70-431 Training Kit's Exam Prep, at which the Exam Prep test engine marked my answer "incorrect", but I am almost sure there are two possible answers to the question instead of just one.

The question is about placing tables that are commonly used in joins, in seperate filegroups on seperate disks, and placing clustered indexes in the same filegroup as their associated tables.

The question's scenario is as follows:

The server computer has three SCSI disks:
disk 1 contains the OS and SQL Server program files
    disk 2 contains filegroup FG1
    disk 3 contains filegroup FG2

The database has four large tables: T1, T2, T3 and T4, each with a clustered index.
    The clustered indexes are CI1, CI2, CI3 and CI4.
According to an analysis, 40% of queries join tables T1 and T4, and 35% of queries join tables T2 and T3.

The question asked me to specify which tables and clustered indexes goes into which filegroups for optimal performance.

    My answer was that
    FG1 must contain T1, T2, CI1 and CI2,
    and that FG2 must contain T3, T4, CI3 and CI4.

The exam prep test engine marked my answer "incorrect", specifiying that
    FG1 must contain T1, CI1, T3 and CI3,
    and that FG2 must contain T2, CI2, T4 and CI4.

But: In my answer I DID put T1 and T4 in seperate filegroups, and I DID put T2 and T3 in seperate filegroups, and I DID put the clustered indexes in the same filegroups as their associated tables.

Shouldn't my answer have been marked correct?

  • yes ,you are right ,you  answer should have been marked correct !!!
    FG1 must contain T1, T2, CI1 and CI2,
    and that FG2 must contain T3, T4, CI3 and CI4.
    FG1 must contain T1, CI1, T3 and CI3,
    and that FG2 must contain T2, CI2, T4 and CI4.
In fact ,Both of them are the same ,and the only difference is that there is a  exchange of 2 and 3,which is ok .
So ,in my opinion ,you are right .

  • *Whew!*   I'm glad to see someone agrees with me.  I couldn't find a corresponding correction in the book's errata page, so I started to think that my answer really was incorrect.  Now I am relieved to know that I gave a correct answer.

I'll try to bring it to Microsoft Support's attention so they can add it to the knowledge base article.

Thank you, I feel better now.  :)
