Windows Live Messenger Stopped Working after Installing Vista SP2 (x64)

  • After upgrading my Windows Vista x64 from SP1 to SP2, my Windows Live Messenger no longer starts.  The \Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Messenger directory appears to be intact, and the registry still shows a valid entry for "msnmsgr" in the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key.  Even if I try to manually start the Messenger by clicking on msnmsgr.exe, nothing happens.  No error message is displayed; nothing happens.  I was going to try to uninstall/re-install/repair Messenger, but I cannot uninstall it or repair it, because it does not appear in the list of installed programs.
