Windows 7 Not Genuine Message after MOBO and processor upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased my copy of Windows 7 from Digital River 12/20009. I originally upgraded from Windows XP. Later I replaced the Hard drive , MOBO and AMD processor with new I5 processor and reinstalled with no problem. Currently my MOBO got fried so I upgraded to a new MOBO and I7 processor. Upon reinstall, I got the Windows not genuine message. I also got  pop ups about the Hard Drive failing so I got and installed a Samsung SSD. Upon reinstall, it said windows was not genuine and on a activation retry later it says it is only for an upgrade. But I had done a fresh install twice previously with no problems.  I have 2 Reports, I ran the MGAdiags before the hardware upgrades showing it was a good and legal copy, and the current MGADiags now after hardware installation. Please help getting this activated.

    Thank you

  • In order to activate an upgrade Windows 7 license, the qualifying Windows XP operating system must be installed:

Windows XP license + Windows 7 upgrade license = Full Windows 7 license

  • Thank your for your reply. I have had this since late 2009, originally installed in early 2010. I believe I did a fresh install then because I went from a 32 bit to 64 bit system. I Have done two reinstalls without XP without a problem. Are you suggesting I need to start all over again, wipe the SSD clean and redo the install with a copy of XP?  I don't even know if I could lay my hands on a copy given Its been 4+ years since I installed Win 7. The initial MGADIAGS posted shows it is a valid license. Isn't there a way to activate again without having to start all over - not sure I can even find a valid copy of XP.

  • I had the same post after changing MoBo called and was told activation is for that set up only; When you change major parts MoBo, Cpu you have to call and they will talk you through new activation of new  set up.

  • That doesn't apply where the install is a clean/fresh one - only where the previous installation is carried through to the new hardware.
