  • Gimme a break!

This computer was manufactured in 2006 - but claims to have a manufacturer's install for Windows 7.

The SLIC table claims to be Dell - but the machine is an HP, and the Key is from a Dell.

This installation is counterfeit - and may just about have a Vista license, since the BIOS date is from a week before Vista went RTM, but is more likely to be an XP machine.

What does the COA sticker on the case say is the licensed version and edition of Windows for the machine?

You need to clean install using a licensed copy of Windows - the Activation Exploit currently in use renders teh security of this machine doubtful at best.

  • From the looks of it, the system was supplied with XP Media Center Edition - and getting disks for that is like trying to find a matching pair of hen's teeth! :(

In addition, if the only thing you can read on the sticker is that code, then you are out of options, as MS will no longer provide replacement Keys for MCE.

Unless you can find proper Recovery disks for your machine - either from a specialist such as restoredisks.com, or from HP itself, then you are going to have to either purchase a new full retail Windows license, or replace the machine - the most cost-effective would be to replace the machine, since as a result you would have much better machine, even with what would now be considered a bottom-end bargain-basement model. Just make sure that you get it from a reputable dealer, and a reputable manufacturer.

Don't be tempted by offers on eBay - all too many come with counterfeit software, and you'll end up going through the same hassle again!
