  • Hi jwally,

I have one last set of steps you can try:

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

If that doesn't work, then I recommend creating a (no cost) support request at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactwga for additional assistance.

    Thank you,

  • Hello jwally,

Computers, which are built by large manufactures that come with Windows Pre-Installed, come with two (2) Product Keys:

    A)   OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the special instructions found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Vista looks at the motherboard and sees the special instructions and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)

    B)    COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or bottom) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations (sush as if the OEM SLP key stops self-activating for whatever reason). The key must be activated by Phone. (Note: All manufacturers that use the OEM SLP system are required by contract to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker, that has a COA SLP key, on the computer)

Your Windows is using an OEM SLP key, but (for whatever reason) cannot see the special instructions in the computer’s motherboard and is unable to Self-Activate.

To fix the issue, you will need to change out the OEM SLP key with the COA SLP key.  The normal way to do this is to click the ‘Start’ button, right-click ‘Computer’, select ‘Properties’ and then click ‘Change Product Key’ (located in the lower right-hand side of the window). Enter the COA SLP key and follow the instructions in the Change Product Key Wizard.

Alternate steps to change the product key

    1)    Click the Start button

    2)    Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    3)    Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    4)    Click the Next button.

    5)    You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    6)    It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 7)

    7)    Click the Start button

    8)    Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    9)    Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice. If the Automated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep., select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case; only thru the Live Activation Rep. will your Activation be successful.

     Thank you,

  • I can only get into the computer with reduced functionality.  No start button.  Please don't tell me i am sol.

  • I’m sorry, I didn't realize your Vista was in Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM).

It can be a little tricky to change product keys in RFM because you can't get to the system window (that has the "Change Product Key" button) and if you try the slui 3 command to launch the Change Product key wizard, the only thing that happens is you see the Windows that has the "Use Windows with reduced functionality" option, again.

    But it can be done.

    1) Login to Windows and select the "Use windows with Reduced Functionality" option. (An internet Browser should then open)

    2) Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field

    3) Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right-click the file and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: slmgr.vbs -ipk <KEY> and hit the Enter key. (replace <KEY> with the Product Key found on the sticker on your PC).

    6) Type: slmgr.vbs -ato

    7) Close all Windows and reboot 2 times

Tell me if you have any troubles with the instructions I provided. Be sure to give me the exact error message (and at what step the message occurred) if you receive any errors.

    Thank you,

  • First error is:

Run 'slui.exe 0x2a oxC004F050' to display the error text.  Error 0xC004F050

I typed this in and it brought up the activation screen that I have tried to put the key into several times before I contacted you.

    Second error is:

Activating Windows (TM) Vista, HomePremium edition (bffdc375-bbd5-499d-8ef1-4f37b61c895f).  Error Product activation failed.

I am about 95% sure I am typing the product key correctly, but since it is a laptop, it is very worn.

Thank you for your continuing help.

  • I am also having the exact same problem and Microsoft is of no help.  By the time I got passed from here to there Tech Support had already closed for the day.  Why is this happening to us?

  • If you are having a Non-Genuine issue please create your own thread and post a Diagnostic Report.

All Non-Genuine issues look the same but can be cause (and fixed) in a number of different ways.  If your issue is not "the same" as the original posters, then we have multiple different issues being worked in the same thread.  This usually causes confusion and a slower Time to Resolve, for everyone.

I see that you tried some thing to resolve your issue, but I don't see any indication that you try the steps I provided?  If you did, what was the result or error messages you received?

  • I have a suggestion for the worn keyboard, if that is truly causing an issue - plug in an external USB keyboard.

That is, of course, if Windows in Reduced Functionality Mode can still install a USB keyboard driver.

If not, well... shame, Microsoft, shame: look what your anti-piracy policies are doing to what appear to be genuine paying customers who do not need this kind of hassle! Honestly. Is this how Microsoft treats -paying- customers?

Why yes, yes it is. Amazing!

Ok, off the soapbox. Hope the issue can be solved for the genuine, yet 'non-genuine' user.

    Cheers

    Alex.
