Seems to be fixed by Microsoft now, thanks. Nice to be able to see if someone has already solved an issue.

As for the recommended "try a system restore" this isn't logical as the issue was with the site not my computer(s). Recommending I clear the browser cache would be a better suggestion. Thanks coork for using my thread to get your MS points without providing useful advice.

this is listed under forumn issues for which there no points assessed for answers
3 weeks ago had the same problem searched for an answer(i had cleared the browser cache amongst other things) emailed ms support got no immediate answer.went to support ms site gave me this answer, also went to the below site and got the same answer it worked for me. ( mine was an error 500 but only on the forums.) all of the other sites worked fine.

If you test Internet Explorer, and you receive the same error message, go to the next method.
Method 7: Run System Restore
If you are still unable to resolve the issue, and the problem is a recent one, you can perform a System Restore. Although this method may not help identify the issue, it will restore the operating system to its previous working state.

Do not do a system restore as coork suggests. It does not resolve the issue as it occurred on a freshly installed system. I was eventually able to search the forums without performing a system restore on my Vista computer.
