Windows 7 editions and backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Simple question:  Which editions of Windows 7 will WHS back up?

I want to buy a new computer with Windows 7 but I am hesitant about the backup descriptions on this page:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions  where it says the Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium versions "cannot backup to network", which is what WHS is doing.  My WHS with PP3 is currently backing up computers with Win7 U, Win7 Pro, and WinXP Pro.

Is anyone successfully backing up Win7 Starter or Home?  A screenshot would certainly put my fears to rest.

Starter not during it's beta phase, but that was corrected in the final version.

  • That's great.  But, why does the Wikipedia article seem to state otherwise?

Because that's not the same thing.  WHS has nothing to do with the backups that are mentioned on that wikipedia page.

Never heard of websites (Wikipedia included) being wrong and have incorrect information now and then?
You just found an example of it.

No, the page isn't wrong.  It simply has nothing to do with WHS at all.

Yes, I understand that Wikipedia is not a magical source of truth.  The comparison on backup capabilities on that page was sourced from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/compare?T1=tab01 which I would tend to believe.

My concern was that WHS might use service APIs on the client like Volume Shadow Copy or Windows Backup, which might not be fully functional in certain Windows SKUs.  As kariya21 noted, it would seem that the WHS backup isn't the same as the "backup to network" feature, so the limitation does not apply.  Maybe the backup being initiated from WHS which is Win2k3 is allowed, but a network backup initiated by the client would not work.

    Thanks for your help!

Correct.  That article is strictly for the Win7 backup app (not WHS backup).  Again, one has nothing to do with the other.
