WHS Console RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an intermittent connection problem with the console.
I have searched and read numerous other threads on this issue but none seem to offer a solution.
I am running Vista 64 on the PC concerned.
I have PP2 installed on the server along with a few add-ins (Avast, Diskeeper, Lights-out, Disk Management, Advanced Admin)
I can always RDC and access the shares on the server but frequently the console will not connect.

A few things I have noticed are:

The console seems very slow on this PC compared to the others even though it is a "faster" PC.
After entering the password on the console if I hit the enter key rather than clicking the right  arrow button the mouse pointer will not be visible over the console.
The title bar of the console may briefly display "Not Responding" but it may connect after this.

I have tried the console from other PC's and it works fine.
I have reinstalled the console a couple of times using the version from the server.
I have checked the settings on my router and the server and PC firewalls and all the correct ports appear to be listed.
I have tried disabling the firewalls.
I have checked the settings for the NIC's
I have rebooted the server and the PC and reset the console but this does not always enable a connection to be made.

Was it like that before you installed PP2?  Perhaps the drivers for your NIC in your client need updating (or your NIC itself may be having problems).

  • I fairly certain that the network is working fine, I can transfer files to and from the server over the shares and I can connect easily with RDC.

I have also discovered today that two of the other PC's (both running Vista 32) have the intermittent console problem too. Previous to PP2 they had connected via the console faultlessly.
The only PC that does not seem to have the issue is running XP and connects wirelessly rather than over ethernet.

Defiantly not your machine mate, I also ran the auto install of power pack 2, and it’s don’t the same thing to my server.

I tried to reinstall the connector software but this is still Power Pack 1,  And even google carnt find the manual version of Power Pack 2??????

Like you my machine has been running ‘in the background’ doing it’s job for months, and thanks to PP2 (Microsoft’s own upgrade), I find myself here to.

If anyone solves this problem please TELL US ALL !

  • I have got the console working again now but I'm not sure if this is a permenant fix or just intermittent again.
I reinstalled the connector software again but it took numerous attempts as it could not find the server and kept uninstalling it again at the end of the process.
All this time I was able to find the sever on my network and RDC access it.
I rebooted the server and the client PC and this seemed to do the trick and allow me to get the software installed.

I have spent some time looking through the logs on the server and it seems to have some errors.

No, it's not.  Once you've installed PP2 on your server, your Connector software will be updated to PP2 in the share as well.  It just says PP1 in the EULA.

    That's because there isn't one.
