Restore Data Files after restoring OS from Vista to Windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • My laptop had a virus and I had to reload the OS. I loaded Windows 7 instead of the original Vista OS. I have MS Live OneCare and have a data backup taken while running under Vista. How do I load my data from the backup (on my portable hard drive) onto the laptop now running Windows 7? Windows 7 won't let me run Live OneCare.

  • You have two choices.
    1. Restore them to another PC that is still running OneCare and copy them over.
    2. use WinZip or a 3rd party archive program to manually unzip the data files and manually copy them over. If a file that was backed up spans multiple .zip files due to size, you will need to rejoin them. That involves renaming the files *.001, .002, .003, etc. and using this free utility to rejoin them -

  • I had a similar problem.  My computer hard drive died and my new computer has Windows 7.  I followed your advice and downloaded WinZip and tried to unzip the backup files but it says I'm not authorized to open the files.  Is there some way to change that?  ~Gay

  • This is an old thread. There is now a One Care Backup Restore tool that should help - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecarebackupandrestore/thread/e5d686c8-762b-4b22-bc08-bfb93f911e57
