Windows 7 upgrade from Microsoft Store - product key has been blocked 18 months later RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought Windows 7 Home Premium  upgrade from Microsoft Store on 1/1/2010. It installed fine and product key was validated. I've been running fine on it, installing additional MS software which also checked validation, ever since.

Yesterday I get a message that "you may have been a victim of piracy..." and when I try to re-register the product key in the Microsoft Store purchase confirmation (which I saved; excerpt included below) it says "that product key has been blocked."

    Here is the MGAD info:

  • Yes, I called and they say they have validation server problem, that when they resolve it the issue will go away. Too bad they can't broadcast that info along with the spurious message!

  • I have the same problem here :O

  • xstaygoldx,

Another problem you have is that you can't read.  Please observe announcements 1 and 2 at the top of this forum page and start your own thread.  Describe your issue and paste the MGADiag report.  Even if you have the same issue, this thread belongs to dbciii and using Reply means you are commenting on HIS issue.  It is very confusing to try to sort out whose issue is whose if folks piggyback like that.  It is called "hijacking a thread".

It you are talking about a copy of Windows you bought online now saying it is not genuine, contact the Microsoft Store (or Digital River or Microsoft Academic) where you opened your account.  Several users are reporting that the Microsoft Store had a problem this week causing this sort of non-genuine notice.  They report that the Microsoft Store is resolving the issue.  User Soxgone had success with this number: 866-530-6364

  • Per Darin Smith (MSFT), this is the working statement some of us have received for use here in the forums:

There appears to have been an issue with the Product key Activation/Validation servers that only affected a subset of Digitally Distributed Product keys.

This issue has been corrected and users that were affected by this issue should no longer be seeing this Non-Genuine/Key Blocked error.

If you do still see this error please try the following:

    1) Reboot and then re-try Activating and/or Validating.

    2) If you still see the issue, please contact Microsoft Assisted Support (at one of the below URLs)
