  • Question

  • So I just started my computer like usual, but now windows complained about something like it´s not genuine and *** like that, so I clicked the link and downloaded the windows genuine thing.... then I put my password to my prfile and again it complained about windows not being valid, well i clicked the link and it put me to the same site as before. Now if I close the message box that says about the validation, it just puts me back to the profile selection. So I cant use any other programs except internet which I can access by the link. Can anyone tell me what to do in this awful awful situation?!

  • Hi,

What's happening is  called a Tamper State. There is a program that is incompatible with Vista and when that program does something that Vista doesn't allow, Vista goes into a Non-Genuine state.

In your Diagnostic report above, you can see the line that starts with 'TTS Error:' followed by a bunch of letters and numbers: M:20071024072200657-

If you break down the numbers, you will get a Tamper Time Stamp:

(year)  (month) (day) (time in 24format) (millisecond)

    M: 2007      10       24         0722                  00657

Now that we know the time of the tamper, you can now try to connect that time with a program.

    we do that by:

    1) Click the 'Start' button

    2) Right Click 'Computer'

    3) Select 'Manage'

    4) Continue thru the "Windows needs your permission to continue" window (if any)

    5) Click the arrow next to 'Reliability and Performance'

    6) Click the arrow next to 'Monitoring Tools'

    7) Click on 'Reliability Monitor'

    8) Click on the graph above the date 10/24/2007

    9) Below the graph, look at the report titled "Software (Un)Installs for 10/24/2007"

    10) Look for any program that shows "Application Install" in the 'Activity' column.

    11) Since the process that detects Tampers runs randomly, it can take up to 3 days for the process to detect the tamper and set Vista to a Tamper State. Because of this, please repeat steps 8) thru 10) for the dates 10/23, 10/22 and 10/21

This will tell you what programs were installed on the Tamper date and should help you narrow down the possible programs that could be causing the issue . Unfortunately, if you installed the program (say) on 09/01/2007, but you didn't run (and, hence, prompted the tamper state)  till 10/24/2007, this process may not be helpful.

Please tell me if this helps you resolve the issue.

    Thank you,

  • Hi MustisX,

Since it is so new, I do not think it's the Hellgate London game is the cause and if there was any problems like this with the game, there should be information about it in the forums at www.hellgatelondon.com/. I don't have a beta account so I can't see into their forums, but I assume you can.

It is very possible that the tamper could be caused by the Antivirus. The problem with the Tamper Time Stamp is that it records the Most Recent tamper event. (Example: say you ran an incompatible program on 10/02, and Vista went into Tamper. You then rebooted, but didn't run that program again, till 10/24. If you ran a Diagnostic Report on 10/24, the Tamper Time Stamp would show 10/24, not 10/02)

I will see if my Engineers can squeeze more information out of the Diagnostic Report and I will update you as soon as possible.

    Thank you,

    Darin Smith

  • Well, thanks for your help, but it seems the problem has gone away by itself. I just restarted the computer and it started to work and I have been using it for 2 days now. I will use your help, if the problem occurs again, and if it does, I´m going to notice it here. Thank you for your help again and sorry for any time gone to waste for trying to figure out my problem!

  • Okay, the problem came up again so I did what you told me, I checked the programs which I have installed 21-24th day, and I have only installed the regular windows updates and hellgate london beta (it´s a videogame) and I know it´s vista compatiple. Although I have installed new antivirus programs on 19th. Could it really be because of the hellgate london or can the problem be 5 days before the temper thing?
