The OS is asking me to enter the product serial key and when i try it won't accept the genuine key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

two nights ago I tried booting up my lap top and was unable to do so and was given the option to return to a earlier state which would allow me to boot up. The laptop then booted up ok but said it was not a genuine copy of windows( which it is) and asked me to validate the software and enter the serial key. When I first bought the laptop it had windows 7 home edition as its OS. I upgrade to windows ultimate some time later. The software validated ok through Microsoft web site. I first tried entering the ultimate product serial key and an error message came up saying that this was an upgrade serial key and that I needed a full version ultimate key. next I tried entering the original home version serial key and an error message popped saying that this key as no good for the ultimate version software. I appear to between a rock and a hard place in that whichever key i try to enter the OS will not accept it. Can anyone please help as I don't want to do a reinstall of the OS.

  • Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

Please also note that your installation of Office is counterfeit - based on a blocked Volume License Key.

  • To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012)

    Once downloaded, run the tool.

Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.

Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post. (please do not edit the report.)

  • the COA sticker is for the home edition of windows 7 which came installed on the lap top. I then upgrade to windows 7 ultimate with a product upgrade key. When i try to enter the ultimate uprade key a message pops up saying that i need the full vertion and not the upgrade vertion.

    Wednesday, January 2, 2013 10:25 AM
  • It sounds like you botched the upgrade :(

I would suggest using Telephone activation, and asking MS for assistance.

Make sure that you have your Ultimate key to hand, then telephone your local Activation Center - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950929

but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

You will need to explain the problem to them, and they may be able to override the system to install your Ultimate Key properly.
