CRM 4.0 and Windows Server 2008 Web Edition RRS feed

  • Question

  • In my course on CRM 4.0 Installation and Configuration, I learned that CRM can be installed on a Web Edition Server 2003 ( I presume 2008 as well).
According to this KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950100), we need to install Indexing Services which is part of "File Services role" and not "Web Server Role"!

Later on I came across the following article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940518) that states (at mid page) the following:

On a computer that is running Windows Web Server 2008 with Update for Windows Server 2008 Server Manager (KB940518) installed, the server roles and role services listed below appear in addition to Windows Server Update Services. However, installation of these server roles is not supported on Windows Web Server 2008 and only the Web Server role should be installed.

Is my Web Edition server still supported if I installed indexing Services (Pre SP 2) which is required by CRM 4.0 which in turns states that it can run on a Web Edition Server?

After all, Web Edition is the preferred one for organizations that are looking for hosting solutions!

  • Hi,

It's just a matter of enabling the File Services role on the Windows Server 2008 Web Server edition to install Indexing Services. You can do that by click on Start > Server Manager > Add Roles.

The only problem with that is that File Services does not exist as a Role in Web Server 2008. To install Indexing Service, Start -> Server Manager -> Add Features -> Indexing Service.
