How to backup "other" filetypes in \Program Files\* ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My son has a number of games (mostly from Microsoft, in fact, including Microsoft Midtown Madness 2 and others) that save their games to the program's folder in \Program Files\Microsoft Games\Midtown Madness 2\Players .

He has days and days of effort in these games.

How do you propose we back these files up?

In OneCare 1.5, I could simply select the folders and be done with it.

In OneCare 2, we're up the creek due to stupid design.

And Microsoft... stop trying to be the overlords of our backups.  It's our data... it's our storage... let us use it.

  • I'm not familiar with the specifics of how these games save progress, but if they save to \Program Files, then they are not likely to be backed up by OneCare. There are some exceptions to Backup, but the only one I know of is Quicken, which OneCare will backup from \Program Files. If you perform a backup and use the file type other, check the list of files to be backed up and see if these saved games are listed. If not, there is no way to add them to the backup. If the games have a configuration setting to have these saves done to a specified folder, make the change there.

Alternatively, copy these saves manually to a folder of your choosing in the \My Documents structure and they should be backed up.
