  • Question

  • Hi all,
I have just had to reinstall my home server after trying to install power pack 3 beta, I have it installed now and that is not a problem, what I want to find out or work out is this -
can I take an image of my "C:\" of my Home Server so if all goes wrong again I can reinstall that image takeing it back to the point of the Image saving me days of work reinstalling whs and recreating the data poll.  Just incase some one says try the reinstall option from the home server install disk I did that and the option was not available to me, so that says i can not bank on that option.
I have read that imaging is not supported but has anyone managed to get it to work ?
    Many Thanks for any ideas
I have just read the question titled "WHS server recovery on systen disk failure" and I see there that its pointed out that reinstalling from a clone could cause probelms, my question to that would be what probelms would there be ?

  • Imaging your C: partition isn't supported. In addition, it's got a high likelihood of causing problems down the line when you try to restore it.

What could go wrong? You could restore the image and find one or more drives missing from your storage pool. You could lose your backup database. I can think of a lot of other possibilities.

Your best bet would be to investigate why you had a problem with reinstallation. What steps did you try? Did you try wiping your system disk entirely? Are you sure you supplied all the drivers for your storage pool disks? Et cetera?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

As you already noted, cloning is not supported.  You can try it if you like, just don't expect positive results. :)

As for the Reinstallation, it should work as long as A) all of your hard drives are visible in the Load Additional Drivers Screen and B) your primary drive is the first drive seen by WHS (which is usually going to be a PATA drive if you have one in your server, otherwise it will usually be the drive plugged into the first SATA port, typically called "port 0").
