WHS crashes everyday during backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Everyday when I use remote desktop to connect to my WHS I see that the machine hsa been rebooted and there are two error messages waiting for me saying "Windows has recovered from a serious error".

Unfortunately there is nothing relevant in the event log so I am not sure where to start. Can you please help me diagnose the issue and hopefully find a resolution?

    Thank you

  • Start by running chkdsk /r on all the drives in your server, and check the event logs on your server for more information.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

I have already run chkdsk on all of the drive on my WHS, including the ones on the storage pool. No errors or other issues. I have had faulty drives in the past in my WHS, but all of them have been replaced.

I have also tried repairing the backup database, which although successful, it did not make a difference.

  • Yesterday, once more, my WHS stopped responding. This time I noticed that while WHS was not responding, the light for HD activity on the system disk was constantly on.

During this time the box is unreachable via the network. It is not possible to use remote desktop, ping, the WHS client console or network paths.

  • Which type of WHS do you have - self built, OEM?

If OEM, is it an older HP WHS?

If so, did you upgrade the memory in the past? In this case try to downgrade the memory to less than 2 GB.

Also, if the machine is older, you could open the case to ensure, that no dust is blocking the air flow in case, for CPU and power supply fans/coolers and causing overheating that way. Also ensure, that the disks are not too narrow in case and not running too hot.

Slow dieing hardware also has often such effects.

Eventually (but this would crash only the backup service usually) also the backup database is corrupted (this may happen even from a crash while backup is running), and deleting it and starting backup from scratch would be the best choice.

    Best greetings from Germany
