70-680, 70-686 upgrade to Server 2012

Question
-
Hello,
I have my MCITP Win 7 Desktop Technician, but I wanted to also gain the 70-686 so that I can go for the upgrade path to Server 2012 via the 70-417 exam.
I can't seem to get a clear answer to the following question:
Does the combination of 70-680 and 70-686, if gained after Feb 1st 2014, allow me to still use 70-417?
I know that the definition MCITP will be removed, but is it the combination of both exams that qualify one to take the 70-417 rather than the title MCITP?
It seems strange that if 70-417 will still be active for some time to come, that the combination of 680 and 686 are invalid if gained after Feb 1st.
Thanks
HG

Hi, Hoodoo.
To answer your question: No.
You cannot earn either desktop MCITP titles after January 31, 2014. Since you have already passed 70-680 and 70-685, you can still take 70-686 after the deadline, but you will not earn another title. You should already have the MCSA:Windows 7 title. You cannot upgrade from the MCSA:Windows 7 title to MCSA:Windows 2012 with 70-417.
The folks who already have the MCITP:Enterprise Desktop Administrator on Windows 7 can upgrade to MCSA 2012 anytime after the deadline because they have already earned this required title.
It is not the completion of the two exams that you need; it is the specific MCITP title itself you must have. If you do not pass 70-686 by Friday, January 31st, 2014, you will not be able to earn the MCITP:Enterprise Desktop Administrator on Windows 7 title. The 70-685 and 70-686 exams will remain available for people who want to earn the MCSA:Windows 7 title by passing one of these two exams and 70-680.
Have you considered earning one of the other certifications and then upgrading with 70-417? BTW - the MCITP:Enterprise Administrator on Windows Server 2008 title will be attainable until July 31, 2014.
Here are the titles that are allowed to upgrade with 70-417:

Good luck!

By the way - you are just one exam away from earning another MCSA title, MCSA:Windows 8.
You only need to pass 70-689 to earn this new desktop title:
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/exam-70-689.aspxAdmittedly, you cannot upgrade from this title right now. Who knows - maybe in the future you can upgrade to MCSA:Windows 9 with one exam. I am only guessing.
However, it is a separate MCSA certification title - all brand new and cutting edge with no recertification necessary.
It's something to consider - maybe in the future.
Good luck Hoodoo.

Hi Davin,
Thanks for the explanation.
Looks like I'll do the Server 2012 exams one by one, instead of the upgrade then. I guess it's only one more exam than the 686 and 417.
Cheers
