Cannot replace motherboard - need license activation on replacement computer. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have a computer that I bought together with a XP-license. This computer isn't working any more, and changing motheboard wasn't possible my insurance company said, so they gave me another computer instead. Now I'd need to use my old XP-license on this replacement computer. Is that possible? I still payed for the License is what I guess I'm trying to say...

    Many thanks,
    Pär

You can, as long as you completely remove the license from the previous computer. Then install on the new one, and activate by telephone.

  • Blanking,

Thank you for contacting the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum. Was your computer from an OEM? Like Gateway, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Compaq?  If it was, then the license for the OEM copy of Windows XP is tied to the motherboard. Since your motherboard failed, you would need to contact the manufacturer for a similar replacement board. On Retail copies of Windows XP can be installed on 1 machine and moved to another machine should something go wrong.

If your machine was an OEM machine like gateway or dell, I hope they gave you a machine which was another OEM machine with a copy of the OEM Windows XP License. If this is indeed your replacement.
