Repeated WGA download and Expired Security Certificate every time RRS feed

  • Question

  • I hope I am doing this right...I appreciate the time and attention that everyone gives to this forum.

I have my security setting as "Download updates, but let me decide when to install them." I get the 2nd Tuesday updates, as usual, and the occasional emergency ones, too. Without a problem, as far as I can tell. So, something WGA-like is working here...

YET, when I go to the Windows Update site to get manual updates, I can't get any further there than "download WGA."

AND, let us not forget, every single time I look at the security certificate for the ActiveX control necessary to install WGA, it has an EXPIRED date on it. For crying out loud, WGA is the centerpiece of the Windows security system, yet no one seems to think this is a big deal. Why do I need to download WGA repeatedly, and why oh why oh why does this expired security certificate thing happen?  I have spent countless hours with Microsoft trying to get an answer to this question, and it's the definition of madness--expecting a different result when you do the same thing.

    Thanks again.

  • Hello Hacker Go Away,

Have you visited http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and located the "Validate Windows" and "Validate Office" buttons located in the upper right hand corner of the webpage? Right now the only problem I can see is your Microsoft Publisher 2002 is not activated. Please re-activate and you should be okay. Please select the “Activate by using the telephone” option. To activate the product this way, follow these steps:

    1) Start the MS Publisher 2002 program.
    2) In the “Office Activation Wizard”, click the “Activate by using the telephone” option, and then click Next
    3) Read the “Microsoft Office Privacy Policy” page, and then click “Next”.
    4) In the “Select your location” list, select a country or region. Call the telephone number that is listed on line 2. The customer service agent will ask you for the installation ID and will give you a confirmation ID in return. Type the confirmation ID in the boxes provided.
    5) Click “Next”.
    6) On the “Activation Complete” page, click “Finish”.

Please reference the following KB Article should you have any problems http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us.  Here you will find links for various resolutions which you may encounter.  Also reference the following site for various telephone activation centers:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851 Please re-post here should you need further assistance. Thank you and have a great day!

  • Hi,
I am really sorry for the lack of/ delay in reply.

I am still encountering the expired security certificate issue, now also when I try to download IE 7. Curiously, I have downloaded SP3 from another site, and that all looks and feels okay to me. EXCEPT--I still have IE 6 after installation of SP3.  So, whether I download from my computer, or from any of a variety of library computers (I know, they aren't paragons of internet safety, either) I still get the expired security certificate.

I once again spent quite a bit of time pounding MS technicians about this, and was promised a reply in writing about why I shouldn't be worried about using ActiveX controls with expired security certificates.  Here's what I got:

Action: You were trying to install windows updates and security certificates
Result: You had a concern with Microsoft security certificates [what they don't include is "because they had expired dates]
Resolution: ALL CERTIFICATES AND ACTIVE X CONTROLS DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED FROM TEH MICROSOFT WEBSITE ARE SAFE AND DO NOT POSE ANY THREAT TO YOUR COMPUTER.

I am reminded of the WeSaySo Corporation.

If anyone can explain to me why I should disregard these expired security certificates, I will be most grateful.
