Hello sexymccay,
Nope, sorry, the product key updater is not programmed to change one edition of Windows XP to another edition. It only works when the edition of XP listed on the CoA is the same as the edition of XP installed on the computer.
If you do not have the recovery discs for your Gateway, your first course of action is to contact Gateway to see if you can order a set. To do so, start here: https://secure.tx.acer.com/RCDB/Main.aspx?brand=gateway
Here's another possible source for Gateway recovery discs: www.restoredisks.com

Hello sexymccay,
If the Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) affixed to your Gateway computer is for Windows XP Professional, you may be in luck! Try using the Product Key Updater Utility to change the product key and "genuine-ize" your installation of XP Pro. The updater checks about 6,000 Windows files for validity, and if they all pass and your installation of XP Pro is not "hacked and cracked" then it's likely the updater will succeed.
Here's the link to the Updater: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668
OTOH, if your Gateway's CoA is for any version or edition of Windows other than XP Pro, the Updater will not work. In such case you will have to do it the old-fashioned way, that is, backup and offload your data, then do a clean installation of the Windows listed on the CoA using the Gateway-supplied Recovery solution, which is usually a set of recovery discs or a recovery partition on the hard disk drive. For more information on your computer's recovery solution, visit the support pages for your model of Gateway at the Gateway support site. This page may be of assistance: http://support.gateway.com/s/software/medialess/faq/suppage01su44.shtml
Good luck!
