Error code [0x80280107] on Validation Advisor page means validation does not complete

Question

Hi All,
Hope someone can help me with this, as I haven't been on here before apologies if my questions have been answered before, but I did check the forums for information before posting here.
Recently while trying to upgrade the windows Media Player on this PC we were asked to run the windows validator program.
This resulted in a message saying it had failed because "the product key found on this computer is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked."
We believe this version to be legitimate (it was pre installed on the machine prior to purchase from PC World over 3 years ago), so attempted to run the Validation Advisor.
We copied down the windows product key from the back of the machine, and input this information into the Validation Advisor.
But upon submitting the following answers:
{Product key ending in} 4RJ8B
One computer.
I purchased a computer with Windows XP already installed.
My current computer has never been fixed or upgraded.
(then the correct character symbols for human user verification)
and clicking submit,
the message 'please wait' appears with the working symbol, but then the page refreshes to state "A network error or timeout has occurred while processing your request. Please try again later"
And the bottom of the page has the error code [0x80280107]
We have tried this multiple times, over the last 24 hours, and it does not change.
We do not believe there is a network error at our end, as the internet and networking is experiencing no unusual performance issues.
I have searched here for this error message, but it did not highlight any previously similar issue.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? is there a way around it?
Further to encountering this error, after searching the forums, I have found that the product key it thinks we currently has is one that has appeared on the forums before "*****-*****-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8", this key does not match the one we have on the actual PC (ending in 4RJ8B)
Upon seeing this I searched around and tried to run "The Windows Product Key Update Tool", but when I entered the product key which was printed on the label on the actual PC it tells me that the key entered is not a valid key.
Can anyone suggest how we can progress these issues, as we are confident that we do have a legitimate version of Windows and would like to resolve this as soon as possible.
Please find attached the diagnostic information:

Bobbobjames,
Chances are that the Certificateof Authenicity on the computer is for XP Home or Media Center, and if so, that's what was installed on the computer when you bought it from PC World 3 years ago.
Right now it has a nongenuine installation of XP Pro.
The Key Updater utility will return the error you reported when you try to update an XP Pro installation with a PK for XP Home or Media Center or Tablet Edition. It is not designed to do that task. It cannot make an XP Pro installation into an XP Home/MC/Tablet installation.
Use the Recovery solution that came with the computer after backing up your data to cleanly install the original XP Operating System as evidenced on the CoA.

Hi Dan,
Thank you for your quick responce, what you say makes sence. Although we havnt changed the setup since we received it from PC Wold.
and indeed reisntalling the home edition would be a possibility (if we still have the disks)
but the first part of the question related to why i coudl not run the validation advisor page, as there must be a way to redress the issue that we are runnign a blocked version without attempting to reinstall, as we have not personaly been using illegitamate software.
but we can not make our case to MS if the advisor page wont work.
any further suggestions peeps?
Thanks again Dan, what you says makes perfect sence regarding the program not being able to chagne from xp proff to xp home.
