Thanks.

You cannot do a repair install with Recovery disks.A Clean install will wipe ALL data on the disk, so back up your data to external storage first!Once done, follow the manufacturer's instructions to recover the system back to its ex-factory state. Then first UNinstall any existing Anti-Virus (it will be out of date), and run the AV manufacturer's removal tool to get rid of the dregs,Now install a new AV - MSE is as good as any, and free.Update the AV, and then use Windows Updates to get everything up to date.ONLY THEN bring back your data onto the machine - this ensures that the data is scanned by an up-to-date AV which will hopefully catch anything missed previously.

You can reactivate your Windows Vista installation by performing the following:
1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in: slui.exe 3and click on the icon that appears.
2. Type in your Windows Vista 25-character product key that is affixed to your Dell PC.
3. Follow the instructions for phone activation (no charge).

SLIC DELL B8K[MODS = please move this to the Vista WGA forum]It looks as if you had a long-standing infection - the time-stamp on a Mod-Auth Tamper is from June of last year - or that you have had repeated infections. What have you used to rid your system of infection now?Are you *certain* that it is properly clean? As Carey says, you can use SLUI 3 to change the Key but that will not cure any underlying problems.

I did what you suggested and I am still getting the error message: "The product key you have entered will not work with this edition of Windows Vista. You must either run Windows Vista setup or enter a Windows Vista Home Basic product key." So, now what? Also, how can I be certain I no longer have this virus as Noel D Paton warns? I use Avast and Advanced System Optimizer to keep my system clean and running optimally. I am amazed this has even happened because I am so diligent with keeping things clean. Thanks so much for your help. :)

Advanced System Optimiser?
DITCH IT! - it's probably the cause of your problems.

I uninstalled Advanced System Optimiser as instructed. Called Dell for the repair and they want $250!! Is there another solution I can try from my end?

See: Request Dell Backup Discs so you can commence with a "clean install" of the Windows Vista operating system. Cleaning your system of a virus does not correct the damage the virus has done to the operating system. All you have done is removed the malicious virus files that inflicted the damage.

Thanks! I did just as suggested. All is working well and running smooth. I appreciate all the help. I am a semi-pro photographer and use an external HD to store my irreplaceable photos. I plan to use my PC for only this purpose.
