Reclaim a license key on a stolen laptop RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

My laptop was stolen awhile ago. I admit that I lost the hardware, but not sure whether I can use the Windows XP license on another computer? If so, what should I do?

    thanks,

    Cheng

  • OEM licensed software is permanently bound to the very first computer it is installed and activated on.  Therefore, it cannot be used on a different computer.

  • Hello hovercheng,

OEM or retail license for XP?

You can tell by what the product key is printed on:  if on a yellow-orange Proof of License label, it's retail; if on a Certificate of Authenticity, it's OEM.
