My windows 7 installation is now telling me it is not genuine, when it is!

I have had a Dell Studio XPS8100 since 2009 running a genuine copy of Windows 7 Home Premium (built and shipped directly from Dell UK). However since a recent update and the appearance of the Windows 10 upgrade icon, I keep getting a message telling me that windows is not genuine.

I have followed the instructions on the Dell website about this, but it still tells me it is not genuine. It even activated with the correct OEM code, so I am puzzled.

Is this something Microsoft have done when the annoying 'get windows 10' update appeared or is it really coincidence?

How do I fix this or do I just ignore it and wait for windows 10?

Spybot is now considered 'out of date' - there are many malwares out there with which it cannot cope, or even recognise.

I would recommend uninstalling it, and instead installing a more recent/effective product such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which is probably the most effective currently in use.

Unlike Carey, my diagnostic report begins with: WGA Data-> Validation Status: Genuine Validation Code:0. In spite of this, the very annoying and persistent notice appears on my screen on average about 4 times per day, telling me "This computer is not running genuine Windows". Over the past 3 or 4 weeks I have tried all the suggested fixes I have found, from the most recent back to some suggested methods from 2 years ago. The Windows Support site does not seem to have much advice on this at all. Maybe on their "to do" list it is not rated as being of much importance, but as it seems that this problem was created by a Windows update (KB3004394), one would think it would be a fairly simple thing to fix. However, I have diligently checked my update history, and it shows that I have never installed this particular update. I hope that somebody in the Windows support area is paying attention and doing something about a fix.

You need to run the diagnostic and post the results in a BRAND NEW THREAD OF YOUR OWN. Just because it says Genuine at the top means nothing. There may be evidence of a technical issue with some of the files. In order to figure that out you have post your own results.

To confirm that the problem is what I think it is, please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt window and post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

That's the normal response with those errors - let's try fixing them...

I've uploaded a file - sluicom64.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive

Please download and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...

Save it to the default location

This should create a file sluicom64.reg

right-click on the file, and select Merge

Accept the warnings, - you should then get a 'Success' message.

Close all windows, and reboot.

Run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

The report now looks fine - you should no longer be seeing non-genuine notifications.

Please go to www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer - validation should pass.

If not, please post a new MGADiag report.

The most likely cause is probably the use of programs claiming to be registry 'optimisers' or 'cleaners' - ALL such should carry health warnings more severe than the anti-smoking ones!

I trust none of them - and a number of them feature frequently in all support forums after causing problems ranging from the minor to a need to reformat the machine to get it going again! Three or four feature regularly in these forums alone - mostly they appear to be US-created but are in fact Chinese knock-offs using stolen technology or fixes.

That's interesting, the only software that I use like that is spybot. I have used it for years without an issue, I wonder if it caused this issue or if something did it?

Probably will never know!
