Please bear in mind that the proposed customizations are not supported as they are doing things with the different styles on the form. This could cause unexpected results. One of the biggest issues that I can think of stemming is that this solution will not upgrade to CRM 2011 given the new restrictions on their new page object model.
The only supported ways to tackle this problem would be to either use ISV.config or to expose a button as a web application in an Iframe on the form. The button could interact with the form using a combination of CRM web services interaction and cross frame scripting.
