Character encoding problem!

  I have problems receiving emails from french speaking friends as it does not show characters with accents as it is supposed to show. Also if I want to send an article in french by copy and paste to my email and then send it it gives me the same problem too. What can I do? Is there a fix for this or no? Thanks
